5 upcoming Android phones that are worth waiting

http://st1.bgr.in/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/New-colour-variants-google-nexus-5.jpg

There’s always a new Android phone on the horizon, so it’s important to pick your moment carefully when buying a new phone. You don’t want to succumb to temptation only to see the perfect phone for you come out a month later. Keeping up on the rumors and product cycles of the biggest OEMs is a good way to plan ahead, though.

The fall phone release season is well underway now, and some huge phones (both figuratively and literally) are going to drop any day now. Here’s everything you need to know about.
Nexus 6

Just a few months ago the consensus was that the Nexus program was moving aside in order to let Android Silver bring stock Android to the masses. Instead, it now looks like a Motorola-made Nexus 6 code named Shamu (get it?) is going to be announced any day now. As the name suggests, this phone will rock a 5.9-inch screen, placing it firmly in phablet territory. Based on all the leaks so far, this device will looks like a larger version of the new Moto X.

Nexus

According to a leaked spec sheet, the Nexus 6 will have a 5.9-inch QHD (2560×1440) screen with a Snapdragon 805, 3GB of RAM, and a 3200mAh battery. The gigantic battery will please Nexus fans as past devices have always been lacking in capacity. The camera is likely to be the same 13MP module used in the new Moto X, but Android L and its new camera API should make for improved performance.

Speaking of Android L, the Nexus 6 will be the launch phone for Google’s new software. There’s also a Nexus 9 tablet on the horizon, but the N6 is going to be the flagship phone for the next year. Android L (we still don’t know the final name) will bring a radical redesign to the OS along with improvements to process management and battery life.

Pricing and the exact release date are unclear. Rumors point to $350-400 as the starting price for the Nexus 6, so it might be a little more pricey than the Nexus 5 was. The announcement could come as soon as this week, but other sources are claiming it will be early November.

LG
LG G Pro 3

LG has been on a roll lately. After the moderately successful LG G2 in 2013, the company was poised to finally offer a challenge to hometown rival Samsung after the so-so launch of the Galaxy S5. The LG G3 has won praise for its large screen and super-fast camera, but the software experience has also been cleaned up considerably. The company is expected to continue hitting Samsung with the LG G Pro 3, which will essentially be a larger version of the G3.

You can expect a refined software experience on the G Pro 3 as this is usually the part of its product cycle LG uses to trial new ideas. For example, the G Pro 2 saw the debut of the Knock Code security feature, which is featured prominently in the G3.

This device is probably a little further off than most upcoming phones of note, but it’s going to be one of the better phablets you can buy. In addition to a larger screen (probably somewhere north of 6-inches), the G Pro 3 will probably have an updated ARM chip –possibly a Snapdragon 805 or 64-bit Snapdragon 810. We’re looking at late this year or early 2015 for the G Pro 3, so Android L with its enhanced 64-bit support will be the default version.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Release Date Update for Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10: Expected on November 3rd

Rumors concerning Android 5.0 Lollipop's release date on November 3rd for Nexus devices have been confirmed by an internal document obtained by tech site Android Police.

While the release date hasn't been officially confirmed from Google, this November 3rd release date is said to apply to all Google Nexus devices, including the Nexus 9, the Nexus 6, and the aging Nexus 4, 5, 7, and 10.

The Nexus 9 is Google's newest tablet that sports an 8.9-inch display and comes available in 16GB or 32GB models. The Nexus 6 is Google's latest flagship smartphone that boasts a 6-inch quad HD screen and an improved 13-megapixel camera. Both devices will launch on November 3rd.

The document obtained by Android Police was sent to app developers as an instruction in regards to the currently available Software Development Kit for Android 5.0 Lollipop. "Starting November 3rd, Nexus 9 will be the first device available to consumers that will run Android 5.0," the note reads. "Therefore, it is a great time to publish on Google Play, once you've updated and tested your app. Even if your apps target earlier versions of Android, take a few moments to test them on the Android 5.0 system images, and publish any updates needed in advance of the Android 5.0 rollout."

With a record-breaking 5,000-plus new APIs being supported at launch, Lollipop is said to be the most ambitious version of the Android OS to date. This open nature of the operating system is its biggest advantage, allowing developers from all over the world to improve the Android experience for phones, tablets, and wearables.

While the brief note doesn't name any other devices than the Nexus 9 and 6, Android Police mentions previous reports that both the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 will see Lollipop's over-the-air update on the 3rd. The Nexus 4 and 5 were both reported as dropping "in the coming weeks," but it's believed that all Nexus devices may unlock the OS update on the same day.

But as with every other OS update, Android 5.0 Lollipop is expected to roll out to certain users and certain carriers in stages. Then, after the Nexus devices have had their updates, all other Android manufacturers are expected to follow through. The Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 will both launch with the operating system installed, and will be the first to contain the new Android update.

Upcoming technology transformations of the next five years, according to IBM Agence France-Presse

Technology stalwart IBM on Tuesday predicted classrooms getting to know students and doctors using DNA to customize care are among five big changes on the horizon.

IBM said that its annual forecast of five ways technology will change lives in the coming five years was "driven by a new era of cognitive systems where machines will learn, reason and engage with us in a more natural and personalized way."

And while software evolves to "think" in ways similar to the human brain, computing power and troves of data kept handy in the Internet "cloud" will enable machines to power innovations in classrooms, local shops, doctors' offices, city streets and elsewhere, according to the firm behind the Watson computer that triumphed on US television game show Jeopardy.

"Over time these computers will get smarter and more customized through interactions with data, devices and people, helping us take on what may have been seen as unsolvable problems by using all the information that surrounds us and bringing the right insight or suggestion to our fingertips right when it's most needed," IBM contended.

Predictions for the coming five years included "classrooms of the future" equipped with systems that track and analyze each student's progress to tailor curriculum and help teachers target learning techniques.

"Basically, the classroom learns you," IBM vice president of innovation Bernie Meyerson told AFP. "It is surprisingly straight-forward to do."

In another prediction, IBM sees retail shops large or small blending online and real-world storefronts with 'Watson-like' technologies and augmented reality.

Also, doctors will tailor treatments using patient DNA, according to Meyerson.

"Knowing your genetic make-up lets you sort through a huge variety of treatment options and determine the best course to follow," he said.

"They don't have to carpet bomb your body to treat cancer," Meyerson continued. "There is the ability to tailor the attack to improve the efficacy against cancer cells while leaving healthy cells untouched."

Smart machines tapping into the Internet cloud will also be able to serve as "digital guardians" protecting people from hackers by recognizing unusual online behavior, such as shopping binges at dubious websites, and spying scam email messages or booby-trapped links.

"The digital guardian will know you are not someone who goes to a poker site and tops off your account," Meyerson said. "Not only does it shut down the behavior, but it tracks it back to who is doing it and passes the information on to authorities."

The final prediction was that cities will weave social networks, smartphones, sensors, and machine learning to better manage services and build relationships with citizens.

"The city will help you live in it," Meyerson said. "There is a new generation of leaders coming in who are extremely tech savvy and making good use of it."

Oppo finally took the wraps off its much anticipated N3 smartphone in an event in Singapore on Wednesday. The handset is now listed on the company's China website with a price tag of CNY 3,999 (roughly Rs. 40,100). The handset's dual-SIM variant will also arrive later.

The Oppo N3's highlight is its motorised swivel camera that can track objects as they move, and can rotate up to 206 degrees. The camera features 16-megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor with a pixel size of 1.34 micrometres. The camera can shoot panoramas in up to 64-megapixels, also flaunts a Schneider Kreuznach-certified lens build, apart from an LED flash.

Some of the other camera functions that come under the Oppo N3's "Ultra image 2.0" suite include slow shutter, ultra macro mode after focus, and shooting in RAW.

The N3 also features a fingerprint sensor on its back panel that can perform several functions, one of them being protecting images with fingerprint authentication with a single swipe after shooting an image.

The Oppo N3 is listed a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) display with a pixel density of 403ppi. It runs Android 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box skinned with the company's new ColorOS 2.0.1. Better cameras, less glare in iPad Air 2

Review: Better cameras, less glare in iPad Air 2

If I've seen you taking photos with a tablet computer, I've probably made fun of you (though maybe not to your face, depending on how big you are). I'm old school: I much prefer looking through the viewfinder of my full-bodied, single-lens reflex camera, even though it has a large LCD screen.
But as I tested out Apple's new iPad Air 2, I see why people like to shoot pictures with a tablet. Images look great on the large screen, and there's less guesswork about whether or not small details, such as lettering on a sign, will be in focus.

And what you see - and get - with the iPad Air 2 is a better camera. The rear one now matches the iPhone's 8 megapixels, up from 5 megapixels, and incorporates features such as slow-motion video. Packed with a faster processor, the 9.7-inch tablet is also 18 percent thinner and 7 percent lighter than the previous model, at about a quarter of an inch and just under a pound.
Apple is also updating its 7.9-inch iPad Mini, though the cameras, processor and dimensions haven't changed.
The tablets go on sale this week, starting at $499 for the iPad Air 2 and $399 for the iPad Mini 3. Both now have fingerprint ID technology to expedite online purchases through Apple Pay. Gold joins silver and grey as color choices, and pricier models have twice as much storage as before.

Improved camera

The iPad Air 2 takes sharper images. I can tell even before snapping the shot because I see all that detail on the screen. I'm able to read the small name tag on a baby bottle. Lettering on a van across the street looks clearer.
Last month's iOS 8 software update brought panorama and time-lapse features to the iPad. With the iPad Air 2, you can snap 10 shots per second in a burst mode - great for restless kids, as you can choose the best shots later. You also get slow-motion video, though only at 120 frames per second. The new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus offer 240 frames per second as well, so motion looks even slower.
The new Air's front camera gets a burst mode, too, and the front sensor is better than before at capturing light for indoor and night selfies.
Unfortunately, the iPad still doesn't have a flash. Although I prefer taking shots with natural light anyway, a lot of people like the flash. My advice is to light subjects with the iPhone's flashlight.

Better viewing and sound

An anti-reflective coating reduces glare on the iPad Air 2. It's a first for Apple and possibly a first for any consumer mobile device. I was dubious until I watched video with light shining in through my window. The coating didn't eliminate glare completely, but made video viewable. The glare was too distracting on last year's Air.
The coating also promises to improve contrast. However, I had to look hard to notice differences in some dull-color scenes in Showtime's "Homeland." In many cases, the quality of the video stream makes a bigger difference.
To me, the iPad Air 2 also has better speakers. With the volume cranked all the way up, sound is louder on the new model. Apple says there shouldn't be a difference, though I'm not complaining. (My neighbors might, though.)

Other changes

I'm glad to see the fingerprint ID sensor for unlocking both new tablets. Passcodes seem so last century, not to mention inconvenient.
That fingerprint can now be used to authorize Apple Pay purchases in apps. Unlike the new iPhones, the iPad doesn't have a wireless chip needed for in-store transactions.
Then again, I'd probably mock anyone who tried to wave a giant device over a cashier's payment terminal. But I can see myself choosing a tablet over a phone for online shopping, and the fingerprint with Apple Pay will work nicely for that.
For the iPad Air 2 only, there's a faster Wi-Fi technology called 802.11ac, though you need new home-networking equipment to take advantage of it. The Air also gets a barometer sensor to track elevation in fitness apps.

The bargain

Last year's iPad Air was a huge improvement over the 2012 iPad, so this year's update seems small by comparison. The improvements might not be enough for existing iPad Air owners to upgrade, but there's enough there for those who have older models or are getting their first tablets.
The update in the iPad Mini is less pronounced. That makes it less tempting to save $100 by going for the Mini. For the same price as an iPad Mini 3, you can get last year's full-size iPad with similar technical specifications. Bargain hunters should consider previous versions of the Mini, including the original model for $249, the cheapest iPad yet.
If you can afford it, though, spend more for added storage. For $599, you get an iPad Air 2 with 64 gigabytes, compared with 16 GB in the $499 base model. For $699, you get 128 GB. You'll be surprised how quickly your iPad fills up with photos and video - especially now that I won't mock you.
